Cogne lace and bobbin lace in Aosta

The lace of Cogne consists of refined works made using the bobbin lace technique, a traditional method that uses wooden bobbins and fine threads to create highly precise decorative patterns. The motifs range from floral and geometric elements to small stylized Alpine landscapes. They are applied to doilies, borders, placemats, bookmarks, and small textile objects. The result is a light and delicate craft that combines technical skill with patient handwork, typical of the mountain communities of the Aosta Valley.

Cogne lace is one of the most recognizable symbols of craftsmanship in the Aosta Valley and represents a domestic tradition passed down from generation to generation. Historically it was practiced mainly by the women of the village during the long winter months, when agricultural work slowed down. This activity was not only productive but also social: working at the lace pillow meant sharing time, stories, and skills.
